Travel – The Alternative Lifestyle

The Alternative Lifestyle
etripa travel tips relaxing vacations worldwide destinations

Yes there is an Alternative Lifestyle.

You all know that feeling, you wake up in the morning, same routine, locked in by Jobs, Mortgage, Kids. Most people think they can’t change that, it is something that is just insurmountable. Well I am going to tell you that is is not. You can make your life to be what you want it to be. All it takes is the push to say “I’ll give it a try” Really what can happen if it doesn’t work, will you be in a worse place or would you have learned something new, experienced something new. That is the thing. We only have one life and it is not long. It goes so quick. What do you want to do with yours. If you knew your life ended tomorrow, what would you wish you had done.
We had a lot of frequent flyer points and we decided to go “just go”. When we boarded the plane the thought lets go for 3 months, see what we think, if we like it, maybe 6 months. That turned into 6 years of solid travel. We loved it and still want to see more places.
We learned that those precious things that you have worked and saved for and love, are the very things that entrap you into working just to pay the bills. The big house, the flash car, the furniture.
What if I told you that you could get on a plane and rent a furnished apartment in the middle of a major city overseas city and for a lot cheaper than you can by staying at home.
What if I told you that you can often find work online if you want and get paid while traveling the world.
What if I told you that you can travel the world and house sit in different countries and not have to pay rent, electricity and quite often you will get the use of a car to drive around it.
There are so many alternatives to what you are doing and you are paying for it with your life. Start living and see just how many things you have in your life that you don’t need, to have a great time.
Live like the locals in a country that you never even thought you would visit.
Remember our motto if you want to travel don’t put it off “just go”

Rome The Eternal City – Shopping in Rome

Rome – Shopping the Eternal City

What can I say, you are in Rome

Travel Rome Spanish Steps Shopping Etripa
Shopping in Rome, at the bottom of the Spanish Steps are all the Luxury Designer Shops.

Rome  is Shopping Heaven. As we all know the Italians are well known for their fashion and design sense. The shopping just has to be fantastic, doesn’t it? You can shop till you drop here. As for the bargain hunter, there are plenty of little street stalls,  small markets, they just seem to pop up everywhere and the bargains are fantastic. When we were there, the last time, it was getting cold and we bought 2 coats at one of these markets, big, thick and really warm, for 8 euros each, really!  Rome has hundreds of chic designer boutiques scattered through the streets. If you have a taste for Luxury head out to the Spanish Steps at the bottom is the Piazza di Spagna, here you will find all the flagship stores like Prada, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Bottega, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany, Versace, Chanel and yes there are more, who ever you want if they are truly famous they will be here.

Have fun and remember if you do shop till you drop, there’s always a cafe nearby to stop and have a cup of coffee or a glass of wine in.

Arrivederci

Rome – The Eternal City – Dining out in Rome

Dining

The Italians love to eat out with friends, in a romantic alfresco streetside cafe or a fine dining restaurant, either way, it all makes for a great evening, sipping on Chianti and chatting the night away.  Rome is full of restaurants, cafes, and trattorias., something for everyone from fine dining to a bustling pizzeria. Who doesn’t love the Italian food? The interesting thing with the Pizza is they don’t cut it and normally you get a whole pizza on a plate with a knife and fork. It did take us a while to realize that they will cut it for you if asked.  The Pizzas are plainer than what we are used to, the Italians do not really load up the pizzas like we do here. They are much simpler, still delicious though with a crispy crust. The pasta is obviously excellent and of course, you do have to try the Gelati. Top this off with some fantastic Italian Coffee a shot of Limoncello and what a night!

Travel Rome The Eternal City – Travel to Rome Part 3

Rome Sightseeing

Rome is one of the most beautiful cities in the world with the richest cultural heritage and architecture dating back almost 3000 years. The buildings and ruins are nothing short of spectacular, couple this with the famous art that is everywhere, the statues, fountains, buildings. Then lets top that off with the fact that it is one of the leading fashion cities in the world, it is simply a feast for the senses. You really cannot see Rome in one day, I think if you want to go to Rome give yourself at least a week to take in the sights and soak up the atmosphere.

Colosseum

Travel Rome - The Eternal City - Colosseum
Travel Rome – The Eternal City – Colosseum

Just to go to the Colosseum would take you half a day, not to mention the Vatican Museum which by the way is well worth seeing, no matter what your religion is, it is sensational. The famous art that is there is just unbelievable. We had sore necks, just from looking up at the ceilings. The Statues, Paintings, Rooms, The Sistine Chapel. When you have finished you should go next door and see St Peters Cathedral as they are close and on the other side of the River Tiber.

When you do go to the Colosseum it is good if you can take a tour the guides are extremely good at describing how it used to look. It used to be covered in marble before the renaissance. You can also take a tour below the Colosseum. After this visit it would be worth having a cup of coffee then heading down a few streets to Sant Clemente, this is a small church which was built on top of  2 other churches actually one church and a pagan temple, the latter dates back to the 1st century. You can go down below and see the old ruins. You can hear the water still running through the old street gutters. This is how the ruins were discovered, apparently, a priest thought there was a water leak and after getting someone in to have a look at it they discovered the church and temple below. It is fascinating and only costs a couple of euros.

The Palatine Hill is the centremost of the Seven Hills of Rome and is one of the most ancient parts of the city. It stands 40 meters above the Roman Forum, looking down upon it.

You can almost spend a day exploring this area. It is a must to visit,  the old Roman Ruins are spectacular. It is the center hill of the Seven Hills of Rome and the most ancient part of the city. It is 40 meters above the Roman Forum and it is believed that Emperor Augustus was born here. The Ruins of the Forum and Ancient Rome are just brilliant. The Hill overlooks the Forum, Colosseum and The Circus Maximus

Vatican Museum

Travel Rome creation-of-man Vatican Museum Sistine Chapel

The Vatican Museums are simply amazing.  Sitting on  5.5hectares, the museums were originally 2 palaces, joined by 2 long corridors. The Museums proudly boast one of the finest art collections in the world. There are over  7kms of corridors and huge rooms all opulently decorated and filled with art treasures from around the world. The ceilings and walls are covered with frescos from the master painters. Inside the art treasures include Sculptures, Busts, Etruscan Bronzes, Egyptian mummies, Famous Paintings, far too many to list in this blog. One of the things you must see while there is, of course, the famous Sistine Chapel, painted by Michelangelo. The Leonardo Da Vinci Double Staircase this is both stunning and fascinating, definitely a must to use. There are also 3 courtyards in the complex.

You will need a day or two to see all the sites of the Museums and afterward, you should pop next door and have a look at Saint Peters Basilica.

St Peters Basilica

St Peters Basilica is an Italian Renaissance Church (papal seat) within the Vatican City. The architecture is magnificent and well worth the visit. From the magnificent marble interior of the Basilica to the ornate facade and the sheer grandiose of St Peters Square.  The old church was originally built by Constantine in the 4th Century. The original church had been built over a small shrine believed to mark St. Peters burial place. In the fifteenth century, the Pope decided as the church was in disrepair to renovate or rebuild, which started a long process of different popes,  plans, ideas and a lot of money, of course, to build the new basilica with the stunning architecture that we see today. In the centre of the Basilica is the high altar, which sits on top of the site of St Peter’s grave.  Bernini’s famous  Bronze Baldachin, stands over the High Altar. supported by 4 spiral columns. This is the Popes Altar. The impressive dome by Michelangelo is 119 high and is a focal point when in Rome. St Peters Square at the front of the Basilica is stunning with Colossal 4 deep colonnades that curve around the square and frame the Basilica.

The Pantheon

The Pantheon one of our favorite places as previously mentioned, go inside and have a look. This circular building has a portico of large granite Corinthian columns. The Pantheon’s dome is the worlds largest unreinforced concrete dome, which has a central opening “oculus” to the sky. Interestingly the Height of the oculus and the diameter of the interior circle are the same 142 feet or 43 meters. From the Spectacular Columns to the Sensational Ceiling you will be impressed.

Castel Sant’Angelo originally built by Emperor Hadrian for his tomb, this towering cylindrical building is worth a visit, Originally designed as a mausoleum and later used as a fortress, castle, and refuge for a pope, it is now a museum.
